Microsoft Mail on the Office '97 platform
To keep MS Mail from sending quotes and headers in replies:
 -  This info thanks to Tesa (ListOwner) and Nina (Subscriber), Guai-Support FMS/Guafenesin Recovery List

  1. Click the "Reply" button.
  2. Write your intended message. and
  3. Select everything else excluding your message.
  4. Click the "Edit" button
  5. Choose "Clear" from the drop down menu.
  6. Send the reply
MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 97 without service: packaged with Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR1)
To get rid of Rich Text Format in replies: - this is involved, so hang in there:
  1. Download and install the Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR1)
    http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/Articles/sr1fact.htm
  2. .Download and install inetmail.exe which updates Outlook 97.
  3. In the E-mail box, double-click the email address. Clear the "Always send to this recipient in Windows Messaging Rich Text Format" check box. (Note: This must be done *each* time a message is sent via the Reply button.)
  4. Download and install "RTFGuard" This will alert you when a message is about to be sent with RTF formatting, giving you the option to discard the formatting before sending.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 97 with service release 1 SR1
To get rid of Rich Text Format: -

  1. Select "Tools" then click on "Options..."
  2. Click on "Internet Email" tab
  3. Click the circle next to "MIME" and not "UUENCODE"
  4. Uncheck the check box "Allow 8-bit characters in headers"
  5. Check the "Line wrap" box and set to 80 or less. Preferably 72
  6. Make sure to use "US ASCII" character set
  7. Click "OK"

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 97 ADDRESS BOOK
To get rid of Rich Text Format:

  1. Open the "Personal Address Book"
  2. Double Click on the recipients name
  3. Uncheck the check box " Always send to this recipient in Windows Messaging Rich Text Format"
  4. Close Options window

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 98 WORK GROUP VERSION
To get rid of Rich Text Format: -

  1. Select "Tools"
  2. click on "Options..."
  3. Click on "Mail Format" tab
  4. In "Send in this message format" area, select "Plain Text" from the drop- down box.
  5. Click on "Internet E-mail" tab
  6. In "Internet E-mail Sending Format" area, click the circle next to "MIME".
  7. Uncheck the check box "Allow 8-bit characters in headers"
  8. In the drop down box "Encode text using:", select "none"
  9. Click "OK

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 98 INTERNET VERSION
To get rid of Rich Text Format: -

  1. Select "Tools"
  2. click on "Options..."
  3. Click on "Mail Format" tab
  4. In "Mail Formatting" area, select "Plain Text" from the drop- down box.
  5. Click on "Settings..." button
  6. Select "MIME"
  7. In the drop down box "Encode text using:", select "none"
  8. Click "OK"

MICROSOFT EXCHANGE
To get rid of MIME and odd charectures such as = and =3D: -

  1. From the Microsoft Exchange toolbar select "Tools"
  2. Select the "Services" tab.
  3. Highlight "Internet Mail"
  4. Click on "Properties..." and an "Internet Mail, General" window will appear.
  5. Select "Message Format..." then make sure "Use MIME when sending messages" is unchecked. If you turn off MIME here, it will send attachments UUEncoded.
  6. Next, select "Character Set..." in the "Message Format" window
    • In the "UUENCODE Character Set" window
    • Click the down arrow that shows next to the rectangular "window" below where it says "specify a character set for message" text. A set of options will appear
    • Check "US ASCII", then click "OK". This will remove equal signs and "=3D" codes in messages.
    • Then click "OK" on the "Options" menu.
Configuration changes will not take effect until you log off then log back on to Internet Mail.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 98:
To Change the message format to plain text:

  1. Open TOOLS
  2. then OPTIONS then
  3. MAIL FORMAT and
  4. change the Message Format to plain text.

How to Show Extended E-mail Headers:

  1. Bring up the email in a separate window, don't use the preview pane
  2. Go to VIEW then OPTIONS on the email
  3. At the bottom of the option pane is a text field with the raw email headers.
Internet Explorer 3.0 News Program
To keep IE 3.0 news from sending HTMLed messages:
  1. On the IE menu, select News, then Options
  2. Select the Send tab
  3. Check the "Plain Text" box
  4. Click OK.
OUTLOOK 95 & 97:
How to Show Extended E-mail Headers:
You can view additional information about who sent an e-mail message and how it got to you by showing the full headers. The following procedure will explain how to reveal the extended headers of an e-mail and where to send a complaint regarding spam or abuse. To show extended e-mail headers in Microsoft Outlook
  1. Open the appropriate e-mail message.
  2. Select Options from the View menu. This will show additional information that includes the return path, received from data, and the message id.
Note: If you need to report an unsolicited or harassing e-mail, you will need to copy (CTRL C) and paste (CTRL V) the full headers into a new e-mail message.

MICROSOFT INTERNET MAIL:
Wrong FROM address: Some providers use one email address to send email and another for receiving email. You may have to change what MS Internet Mail sends as FROM or set up two subsciptions, one for sending, set to NOMAIL, and one for recieving, set to MAIL. Listserv does not seem to recognize Reply-To in messages, and only looks to the FROM field to see if the sender is authorized to send the commands or posts: To change what MS Internet Mail sends sends as FROM:

  1. Start Internet Mail
  2. Open MAIL and then OPTIONS
  3. click on the SERVER tab
  4. Change your EMAIL ADDRESS
  5. Click on OK
To turn off Rich Text
  1. Open MAIL/OPTIONS
  2. In MAIL SENDING FORMAT select PLAIN TEXT
  3. In SETTINGS FOR PLAIN TEXT select MIME for attatchments and ENCODE SENDING TEXT as NONE.
MICROSOFT EXCHANGE/MESSAGING:
From Windows 95 Annoyances & Fixes
To turn off Rich Text:
  1. Open ADDRESS BOOK and select the internet mail recipient [list address]
  2. Select the ADDRESS TAB
  3. Uncheck the box that says ALWAYS SEND MESSAGES IN MICROSOFT EXCHANGE RICH TEXT FORMAT
  4. Click on OK
To Remove the Equal Signs that Appear in Exchange Messages:
  1. Open the Internet Mail Properties window, and click on the General tab.
  2. Select Message Format, and then Character Set.
  3. Change the character set from ISO-8859-2 to US ASCII.
Stop Exchange from Attaching WINMAIL.DAT: Since Exchange supports rich-text email (bold, italic, multiple fonts, etc.), and Internet email doesn't, any email sent from Exchange to a non-Exchange mail reader will contain an Attachment called WINMAIL.DAT which will show up to many as line after line of binary-looking garbage. Here's how to turn it off: MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER 4.X/OUTLOOK EXPRESS:
To configure replyto and From in Outlook Express 4 & 5:
  1. Open Express
  2. Click on TOOLS
  3. Click on ACCOUNTS or select account if more than one
  4. Click on PROPERTIES
  5. change the "E-mail address" and "Reply address" Fields
To turn off HTML tags and get rid of strange charactures in email messages:
  1. Select "Tools"
  2. click on "Options..."
  3. Click on "Send" tab
  4. In the "Mail sending format" and "News sending format" sections,
    • click on "Plain Text" in both places
  5. In the "Mail sending format" sections, click on "Settings... next to Plain text"
  6. In the "Plain Text Settings" window
  7. Set Message format as MIME
  8. Set "Encode text using:" to None.
  9. Uncheck the "Allow 8-bit characters in headers"
  10. Set Automatically wrap text at 72
  11. Check the box in front of "Indent original text with > when replying or forwarding"
  12. Click OK
  13. in "Send" tab, Uncheck "Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent"
  14. Click on "OK"
  15. Click on "OK"

To turn off "Business Cards" or vCards which are sent as graphic attatchments:

  1. Select "Tools"
  2. click on "Stationery..."
  3. In the "Signature" area, click on the "Signature" button.
  4. In the "Personal Business Card" area, uncheck the check box in front of "Attach card to all outgoing messages"
  5. Click on "OK"
  6. Click on "OK" again

Viewing Full Headers: On occassion, you or your subscribers will need to view full headers - often of private email you find abusive and want to send to the sender's abuse@domain,postmaster@domain and root@domain. You won't be able to view full headers in posts to the list unless you have FULLHDR in the default-options= part of your list's header. Always send full headers when complaining about abusive, harrassing email or email spam. To View Full Headers of an email, open the message. Choose "File" from the options menu bar. Listed as an option is: "properties". Another window will open, showing two tabs. You want to choose the one titled "Details". Then cut and paste the headers into the message you want to forward.
