Rev. Deacon David Hamel

David Hamel at retreat
Deacon David Hamel was raised in New England but met his wife, Janet, in Tulsa in 1986 when he was working for Memorex Telex. One evening after work, at the Wild, Wild West, Janet asked him to dance to Reba’s “Whoever’s In New England” song. It must have been God’s providence because the first thing Janet said after Dcn. David introduced himself was, “You are not from around here.”

He and his wife moved to New Hampshire where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management, and spent the next 23 years in productive careers and working for the Church.

Deacon David was ordained a Permanent Deacon in 2002 for the Diocese of Manchester and received a Master’s Degree in Theology from Notre Dame College (in NH – not the university in Indiana). In 2010, Janet and David moved to Bristow, OK to be closer to Janet’s family and shortly after Deacon David began working at Catholic Charities and is now the Director of Programs and oversees the 14 programs serving individuals with Christ’s merciful love throughout eastern Oklahoma. He received full faculties and was first assigned to St. Joseph in Bristow. Several years ago Deacon was incardinated into the Diocese of Tulsa.

He has an appointment by Bishop Tyson of Yakima, WA as a National Consultant to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s on the subcommittee for the Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers. In addition Bishop Konderla has appointed Deacon David to the Board of Trustees for the Catholic Cemetery Association of Tulsa, and came to serve St. John Parish, Pawnee, OK, June 17, 2018.

For a kid who grew up in the city, Dcn. David has country in his heart now as he and Janet started Ham-Moo Acres where they raise and care for Beefmaster cows, a couple of pigs, 2 donkeys and several dogs and cats.

At the heart of all he does, he tries to model his life as a witness to Jesus as a leader and a servant.
